CLIL

What is CLIL?

CLIL stands for Content and Language Integrated Learning.
It is a teaching approach where students learn a subject (like science or history) through a foreign language, usually English.

Purpose of CLIL

The main goal of CLIL is to help students learn both the subject and the language at the same time.
It develops communication skills while also improving knowledge in different academic areas.

How CLIL Works

In CLIL, the teacher uses another language (for example, English) to teach subjects such as geography, biology, or art.
Students listen, read, and speak in that language while learning the topic — this helps them use the language naturally and with a real purpose.

Example of CLIL in the Classroom

A teacher gives a science lesson about plants in English.
Students learn vocabulary like roots, leaves, and photosynthesis while also understanding how plants grow.
They are learning science content and English at the same time.

Benefits of CLIL

  • Improves language skills in a natural way.

  • Helps students use English for real communication.

  • Increases motivation and curiosity.

  • Develops cultural awareness and global thinking.

  • Strengthens memory and understanding of content.

Key Elements of CLIL

  1. Content: The subject students are learning.

  2. Communication: Using the foreign language to express ideas.

  3. Cognition: Thinking, analyzing, and solving problems.

  4. Culture: Understanding different perspectives and contexts.

Why CLIL Is Important

CLIL prepares students for a global world.
It helps them become bilingual, confident, and open-minded, ready to study or work in international environments.
