English teaching models to practice: How to teach English in elementary level
The purpose of
this document is to present some basic ideas that serve as guidance and support
for second (foreign) language teachers in their definitions regarding
curricular development, within institutional educational projects.
Specifically, we address discussion points that have an impact on foreign
language pedagogy. Likewise, the educational assumptions and correlates from
which the proposed indicators of curricular achievements corresponding to
Resolution 2343 of 1996 were defined are made explicit.
The teaching of English
in Colombia is guided by the Ministry of National Education (MEN) and follows
specific guidelines, laws and decrees that shape the English curriculum in

Bilingualism Program (PNB): Its objective is to improve English proficiency
among students and teachers.
Basic Standards
of Proficiency in Foreign Languages: English (2006): Defines the expected
levels of proficiency in English for the different educational stages.
Curricular Standards and Basic Learning Rights in English To standardize English teaching in elementary schools, MEN provides Basic Learning Rights (DBA) and Curricular Standards, which align with international frameworks like the MCRE.
1. Curricular Standards
These standards outline the competencies students should achieve at each grade level. For primary education, they focus on:
- Listening comprehension: Understanding simple phrases and instructions.
- Speaking skills: Expressing basic personal information and interacting in simple conversations.
- Reading comprehension: Recognizing common words and short texts.
- Writing skills: Writing short sentences and basic descriptions.
2. Basic Learning Rights (DBA)
The DBA serve as essential guidelines to ensure all students achieve fundamental English skills. Examples include:
- Recognizing and using greetings, farewells, and polite expressions.
- Identifying and describing objects, animals, and family members.
- Understanding simple stories and responding to basic questions.
3. Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (MCRE)
The MCRE provides a global benchmark for language proficiency. In Colombia, elementary students typically aim for A1 level, which includes:
- Understanding and using familiar everyday expressions.
- Introducing themselves and answering simple personal questions.
- Interacting in a basic way when the other person speaks slowly and clearly.
Practical Teaching Models for English in Elementary School
To effectively implement the curriculum, teachers can use various English teaching models, such as:
1. Communicative Approach
- Focuses on interaction and real-life communication.
- Uses role-playing, storytelling, and group activities.
2. Task-Based Learning (TBL)
- Engages students in meaningful tasks like creating posters or participating in simple dialogues.
- Encourages critical thinking and collaboration.
3. Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)- Integrates English with other subjects, such as science or social studies.
- Helps students acquire language naturally while learning new content.
4. Total Physical Response (TPR)
- Ideal for young learners as it combines language learning with physical movement.
- Helps with memory retention through activities like Simon Says.
